Ingredients
1boxwhite cake mix(plus ingredients on the back of the box to prepare the cake)
Prepare the cake mix batter according to the box directions.
Scoop out 1 ½ cups of batter and pour it into a small bowl. Add your food coloring to the batter to achieve the color you would like and mix well. You could also add some extract if you would like to flavor the heart.
Pour the colored batter into a greased and floured 8 inch square pan and bake for about 12 minutes. Cool completely.
Using a 2" heart cookie cutter, cut out heart shapes and set them aside.
Pour half of the remaining white batter into a greased and floured loaf pan. Place the colored hearts into the pan vertically, along the center. Pour the remaining batter over the top.
Bake for about 40 minutes, until toothpick comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes and then turn the cake out of the pan and cool completely on a wire rack.
For the Frosting:
In a small bowl, combine the butter, powdered sugar and start with 2 tablespoons of milk. Mix well, until all of the sugar lumps are gone. Add more milk if you would like a thinner consistency.
Spread over the top of your cooled cake, slice and enjoy!
