Oreo Frosting

This Oreo frosting tastes just like the white filling of an Oreo cookie! Perfect for cakes, cookies, cupcakes and more.

A few years ago we set out to make the best Oreo frosting. We wanted it to taste just like the filling inside an Oreo cookie sandwich. How do you get the delicious richness of a buttercream with the sweetness of Oreo filling?

Our trick was to use both butter AND shortening. The combination of the two gave the flavor and texture we wanted. Not too sweet. And not too buttery.

The result? This amazing frosting. It’s delicious enough to eat just with a spoon. Trust me. I’ve done it an embarrassing amount of times.

Why you’ll love this frosting:

  • It tastes like the middle of an Oreo. ‘Nuf said.
  • Add as many Oreos as you’d like! More Oreos means a darker colored frosting…more chocolate in flavor.
  • Pairs with just about any cake, cookie or cupcake.
  • Stable enough for piping.

How to Make Oreo Frosting:

  • In a stand mixer, whip the softened butter and shortening on medium speed for 2-3 minutes until it is almost white in appearance. Scrape the sides of the bowl as needed.
  • Add the vanilla and powdered sugar. Mix on low speed until the powdered sugar is all incorporated. Scrape the sides of the bowl as needed.
  • Add in the heavy cream, one tablespoon at a time, and beat the frosting on medium speed until the frosting has reached the consistency that you like. (I used 6-7 tablespoons of cream).
  • Add the Oreo cookies to the frosting, 3 at a time, and beat on medium-low speed until they are all broken up and blended in.

How to Store Frosting

This frosting is safe to store at room temperature for 24 hours. After that, if you happen to have extra from making your dessert, you should refrigerate it. You can even freeze it if you’d like!

If you do choose to freeze it, whip air back into it after it has defrosted by using your stand mixer with the whisk attachment.
