If there are two flavors that go together, it is chocolate and coffee. Have you tried coffee in chocolate cake yet? Even if you aren’t crazy for coffee, I think you’ll love it. Coffee enhances the flavor of chocolate.
In general, mocha means any coffee flavored with chocolate. It can be a fancy mocha drink with high quality melted chocolate at your favorite coffee shop. Or it can be a quick mix of hot chocolate mix with coffee.
Today we’re showing you how to take the mocha flavor you love to your baked goods with this chocolate mocha frosting.
Why you’ll love this recipe:
- rich and chocolatey
- light espresso flavor
- perfectly spreadable
- pipe it in pretty swirls!
How to Make Mocha Frosting
- In a stand mixer bowl, whip the softened butter on medium speed until it is almost white in appearance.
- Add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder. Mix on low speed.
- Add in the cooled coffee and whip the buttercream on medium speed for 3-4 minutes, or until light and fluffy.
What to use this frosting on:
- whoopie pies
- chocolate cupcakes
- dark chocolate cake
- brownies
- barley flour cake
- chocolate blackout cake
Can you pipe this frosting?
Yes you can! Butter frosting however will melt more quickly than frosting with shortening. The warmth of your hands may melt the frosting as you pipe it on the cake. For that reason, you may find you need to refrigerate the frosting slightly as you pipe swirls and cake decorations.
How to Store Frosting
This frosting is safe to store at room temperature for 24 hours. After that, if you happen to have extra from making your dessert, you should refrigerate it. You can even freeze it if you’d like!
Can you freeze frosting?
Yes! If you’ve found you’ve made too much frosting, you can freeze it to use later. It’s a great way to make quick cookie sandwiches and to frosting a few cupcakes.
If you do choose to freeze it, whip air back into it after it has defrosted by using your stand mixer with the whisk attachment.
