What Kind of Sugar Can I Use to Make Keto-Friendly Frosting?

To give this Keto chocolate buttercream its sweet flavor, I use Lakanto Monkfruit Sweetener, which is a cup-for-cup alternative to regular powdered sugar.

There are other low-carb sweeteners available such as Confectioners Swerve, which are extremely suited to make frosting.

Make sure the sweetener you use is an exact 1:1 sugar replacement, or else the sweetness will be unbalanced.

If you only have granulated sugar, run it through the food processor to get a powdered texture. Using plain granulated sweetener as is will make this frosting too gritty and won’t work for this Keto buttercream.

How to Make Keto Chocolate Buttercream

For best results with buttercream frosting, I always recommend using a stand mixer. Stand mixers are the best way to give your buttercream that silky smooth texture without cramping your hand.

  • In a large bowl add the softened butter. Beat with an electric mixer on high for 5 minutes until it’s fluffy and white in color.
  • Add the powdered sweetener and cocoa powder and beat it on the lowest setting for one minute, or until the sweetener is completely mixed in with the whipped butter.
  • Increase the speed to high and beat for 2 to 3 minutes or until the texture is light and fluffy.
  • Add the vanilla extract and heavy cream and beat again for 2 minutes.
  • You can use the frosting immediately to frost your favorite Keto cakes or refrigerate it for later.

How Much Frosting Does this Make?

This recipe makes enough frosting to fill and frost a 6″ three-layer cake. It will also cover an 8 or 9″ two-layer cake completely.

Can I Substitute Milk for Heavy Cream?

No, milk is not a Keto-friendly ingredient and cannot be substituted for heavy cream. If you need to find a substitute for heavy cream, you can use almond milk or full-fat coconut milk.

Can I Use Regular Unsweetened Cocoa Powder for Dutch Processed?

Dutch-process cocoa powder alkalizes the cocoa powder, giving it a richer, chocolaty taste. It is optional in this buttercream recipe. Regular unsweetened cocoa powder works as well. Note that the frosting will be slightly lighter in color with the unsweetened cocoa powder.

Can I Freeze Keto Chocolate Buttercream?

This frosting can be frozen for up to six months. Prepare as directed, and then freeze. Once you’re ready to use it, thaw it in the refrigerator overnight, and then beat with an electric mixer for couple of minutes until light and fluffy.
