Regular coffee cakes are boring, but this one is delicious and a must bake. While I’m not a huge breakfast person, all bets are off when there is a breakfast cake around. I do feel as though anyone would wake up quickly thanks to the smell of this Chocolate Chip Coffee Cake.

I’d say that this cake ranks up there with my Cinnamon Roll Cake. I personally like cakes that you can eat any time of the day. I would describe this cake as being very moist and crumbly.

This cake is delicious, but I think what makes it even more yummy is the crumble topping. Coffee cake is well-known for having the best topping. In fact, can it be considered a coffee cake without an amazing crumbly topping? I think not!

With this topping, you are simply mixing some ingredients together. You’ll soon find out that it’s a simple topping, but a delicious one.

Where Does Coffee Cake Originate From?

When I decide to make a cake, I’m always interested in the history of it. I remember making my Easy Coffee Cake and I really studied where coffee cakes come from. The very first coffee cake was thought to have come from Germany (source). Around 1879 is when the term “coffee cake” became a household name. I think it was then that people realized how amazing this cake it.

Does Coffee Cake Have Coffee In It?

It’s very rare for coffee cake to have actual coffee in it, but nothing is impossible. In fact, the point of coffee cake it to enjoy it with some coffee. It doesn’t have to be any type of coffee in particular, whatever you like!

How to Make Chocolate Chip Coffee Cake

Why do people love putting chocolate chips in their cakes? I personally think that chocolate with anything tastes amazing. However, if you’re able to add it to a breakfast cake, you are doing something really. amazing. I try to put chocolate chips in whatever I can. Take my Chocolate Chip Bundt Cake for example.

Let’s make this chocolate chip coffee cake!

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees and prepare a 9-inch pan with non-stick spray.
  • In a large bowl add together the flour, baking powder and salt and whisk until combined. Set aside.

  • In another mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar. One at a time, add the eggs into the butter mixture and mix in between each one.

  • Add in the milk and yogurt, and then mix again until well combined.

  • Start to slowly add the dry mixture into the wet mixture and mix well.

  • Add in the chocolate chips and stir them into the batter using a spatula.
  • Pour the batter into your prepared dish and prepare the crumble topping.

Look at how delicious this cake mixture looks together? I’m not going to lie, I always lick the spoon when the batter looks this good. Who doesn’t? My kids like to lick the spoon too, it’s like a right of passage when you’re a kid.

How to Make the Crumble Topping

The crumbly topping of this Chocolate Chip Breakfast Cake is the most amazing part of the cake. Don’t worry, making it is super simple.

  • Using a pastry blender or food processor, add the butter, cinnamon, flour and brown sugar together.

  • Blend until a fine crumble has been reached.
  • Pour the topping over the cake batter and top with the ¼ cup of chocolate chips.

The chocolate chips help to make this coffee cake taste amazing. It’s without a doubt the star ingredient in this cake. If you don’t like chocolate chips, I’m not even sure you can be human. Whenever you take a bite of this cake, you have ooey gooey chocolate to enjoy! You can use whatever type of chocolate chips you’d like: semi-sweet, dark chocolate or milk chocolate chips! The thing about chocolate is that it always tastes good.

How Long to Bake Coffee Cake

Bake for 35-45 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.

How to Store Cake

Store the cake covered on the counter top for 2-3 days. If you have some leftovers, you can freeze them. This cake freezes really well!
