What type of molasses is best for baking?
You’ll notice the recipe calls for molasses. Unsulphured molasses to be exact.
You can try other types of molasses. Unsulfured molasses are what is mostly used in baking because they preserve well and they are more mild in flavor than sulfured molasses. Also, light, medium, and dark molasses all have a different sweetness flavor. These donuts are already pretty sweet though, so don’t worry too much about adding extra sweetness with the lighter molasses.
How to Make Donuts with Cake Mix
You’ll need a mini donut pan to bake these in. A nonstick pan works beautifully!
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- To make donuts, whisk the cake mix, ground ginger, cinnamon, and cloves together. Whisk until evenly combined.
- Add to the dry ingredients the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and molasses. Mix until just incorporated.
- Pour batter into a greased mini donut pan. This is difficult to do straight from the mixing bowl. I recommend spooning batter into a big zipper bag, sealing it closed, and cutting a small hole in the corner. Then you can squeeze the mixture more easily into the donut holes. Do not fill holes more than halfway, as these will rise a lot.
- Bake in the oven for 8-10 minutes or until a tester comes out clean.
Whisk the sugar, cinnamon and ginger together, then dip the hot donuts in the sugar mixture. The sugar mixture will stick to the donuts better if your roll them when they are hot.
How do I store these donuts?
These donuts will store well in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5-7 days. If you store them in the freezer in aluminum foil or a bag, they will last for up to three months.
