Can you make cookies from cake mix?

Using cake mix as a base for cookies is a convenient shortcut, as it already contains many of the dry ingredients you need for baking.

To make cake mix cookies, you’ll typically mix together the cake mix, eggs, oil or butter, and any additional ingredients you want (like chocolate chips, nuts, or sprinkles). Then you bake as you would traditional cookies.

Ingredients

  • Choose your favorite chocolate cake mix for this recipe. I often choose Betty Crocker or Duncan Hines I like a dark chocolate mix, but fudge, German chocolate and devil’s food cake mix also work great.
  • If you only have unsalted butter, use that and add a pinch of salt.

How to Make Double Chocolate Chip Cake Mix Cookies

  • Prepare. Preheat the oven to 350ºF and line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Mix dry ingredients. Whisk together the chocolate cake mix and cocoa powder in a large mixing bowl.
  • Add wet ingredients. Use an electric hand mixer or stand mixer to beat in the eggs and melted butter until completely combined, about 1-2 minutes. Scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl while mixing. Add in the dark chocolate chips and mix well.
  • Bake. Use a 1 ½ tablespoon cookie scoop to scoop out cookie dough and roll it gently into a ball. If you find that the dough is sticking to your hand or the scoop, you can use an extra sprinkle of cocoa powder to prevent it from sticking too much. Repeat and place the cookie dough on the prepared sheets, about 1 ½ inches apart. Bake for 7-9 minutes or until crinkly and set on the edges. Do not over bake.

Recipe Variations

These Chocolate Cake Mix Cookies are easy to change up when you’re in the mood to do so. Here are a few fun and quick ideas to get you started:

  • Change up the type of cake mix. You can start with any cake mix and make a delicious cookie with this recipe. If you don’t want to use the cocoa powder you can substitute all-purpose flour instead. Think of white cake mix, funfetti cake mix or red velvet. 🤤
  • Change out the dark chocolate chips for white chocolate chips, butterscotch or peanut butter chips.
  • Add a teaspoon of vanilla or almond extract.
  • Add in chopped nuts. Chopped walnuts or pecans go especially well in this recipe. You can substitute some or all of the chocolate chips for nuts.
  • Coat the cookies in powdered sugar for an extra crinkly look or use a variety of sprinkles or nonpareils to give them a fun, party look.
  • Change up the size of the cookies to make little bite sized cookies or giant, gooey ones. Just be sure to adjust the cooking time as well.
