Baking Recipes From Scratch

If you’re the kind of person who loves to bake but considers brownies from a box an acceptable dessert, allow me to try to change your mind. Baking from a scratch isn’t the daunting challenge some make it out to be. In fact, it isn’t that much tougher than baking from a box, and you’re sure to impress your dinner guests with your new skills in the kitchen. The next time you’re tempted to bake a sweet treat, consider a few of the benefits of baking recipes from scratch:

  1. You can adjust your recipes to feed a crowd or a party of two. If you’re baking from a box, you’re confined to exactly what’s in that package. What if you want an individual portion or need to make enough to feed your office? Well, you’re stuck with what you have. If you bake from scratch, you have much more control over the baking process. Recipes are easy to scale and there are tons of free tools online that will handle the math for you.
  2. You’ll know exactly what’s in the desserts you enjoy. Food shouldn’t be a mystery. While most simple cake and brownie mixes have easy-to-digest ingredient lists, flavored cake mixes or frozen cookie doughs quickly become questionable. Make your own cake mix from flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt – that’s all it takes to form the mix you’d typically buy from the store. Then, infuse your cake with natural flavors and add eggs, oil, and water to moisten the batter.
  3. You can still have convenience. If you like the convenience of the boxed cake mixes, portion out your homemade cake mix into resealable plastic bags or glass jars. You can even dress these up and gift these custom cake mixes to friends and family around the holiday season.
  4. You’ll understand the process. When you know the ingredients that go into the desserts you bake, you can start to consider the role each of them plays in the recipe. Baking powder acts as a leavening agent, causing your cake to rise. The amount of sugar you put in directly impacts how sweet your cake is, and adding only one egg instead of two will leave you with a much drier finished product. Once you know how your ingredients impact the outcome of your cake, you can make adjustments to your recipes based on the outcome of your cakes, and you’ll be well on your way to becoming a better baker.
  5. You’ll save money. Baking recipes from scratch is often cheaper than baking from a box. It’s easy to spend several dollars on store-bought cake mix, a can of frosting, and some novelty sprinkles. If you like to bake, take a look inside your pantry. You likely already have all the ingredients you need to bake and frost a cake. If you’re just getting started, consider stocking your cupboards with some critical ingredients as a crucial investment. Flour and sugar are likely already staples in your pantry – you won’t need much more to create your next cake!
