What is a dump cake?
Dump cake is a layered dessert that uses a dry box cake mix. It has fruit or canned pie filling on the bottom, then is topped with a dry cake mix and drizzled with butter and sprinkled with pecans. It’s popular because it is so quick to put together. It’s called a cake, but is more like a fruit cobbler or a crisp.
How to Make Caramel Apple Dump Cake
Preheat the oven to 375º Fahrenheit and spray a 9×13 baking pan with cooking spray (or grease it with butter).
- Spread the apple pie filling evenly in the bottom of the prepared pan. I like to use Comstock More Fruit Apple Pie Filling.
- Heat the caramel dip for 30 seconds in the microwave. Use a knife to mix the caramel. Heat for another 20-30 seconds or until the caramel is softened. It just needs to be soft enough to dollop over the apples.
- Dollop spoonfuls of caramel dip evenly over the apples.
- Sprinkle the dry cake mix evenly over the caramel and apples.
- Drizzly the melted butter evenly over the dry cake mix
- Sprinkle the pecans on top.
- Bake in oven for 45-55 minutes or until you see bubbling on the sides of the cake.
How do you know when dump cake is done? There are no eggs or raw ingredients in this cake recipe that need to be cooked a long time, so you’re simply waiting for the cake to get bubbly on the edges and browned on top. This will let you know that it is warmed through.
Can dump cake be made in advance?
You can make this cake the day before, however it is best if you serve soon after baking. The top of the cake will have a slight crunch to it. If you save it, that topping will soften.
Whenever you serve it, serve it warm, even if that means reheating it the next day.
Storage Instructions
Store this cake in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
